I had never thought of a comment policy, because like you, I go through and approve those that seem okay (most of them). So far I have had no issues with the comments posted on my blog. However, I do think that students should be taught about appropriate commenting, as part of appropriate blogging etiquette.

I really like your idea of a guide rather than a policy, which sounds so much more formal and rigid. While blogs are thought provoking and educational, they are also meant to be fun!

No I don't have a comment policy and wasn't comfortable with the whole topic. However after doing a thorough pros and cons have decided that a "Newbies Guide to My Blog" or "First Time Visitors Guide" where it is written in friendly language and explains how to comments is a good idea. So have added it to my to-do list.

Funny how Michele has noted herself that the word policy provokes strong emotions in us as opposed to if she had said put out a Welcome mat and explain how to comment on your posts.
